Our school believes that positive parents/family involvement is a key component to reach the greatest student achievement possible and will encourage involvement in all school activities.

𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 is essential for building a strong foundation in learning, developing social skills, and fostering discipline. Consistent attendance ensures that students stay on track, engage with new ideas, and develop critical thinking, all while preparing for future success.
Please encourage your children to attend school regularly. If they must miss school, below are some examples of excused absences:
🐾Personal illness
🐾Court appearance
🐾Medical appointment
🐾Death in the immediate family
❤️🤍Please send a note with your child when they return to school.🤍❤️
🛑𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: 𝟏𝟖 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬
🛑Excused and unexcused absences represent lost time in the classroom and lost opportunities to learn.
🛑Missing just one day every two weeks can add up to 18 days in a year. Absences add up before you know it.
🟡𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟕 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬
🟡Students who are absent an average of 15 days a year miss a year's worth of school before their senior year.
🟡When students miss a day of school it actually puts them two days behind their classmates.
💚𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝟗 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬
💚Students with good attendance generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school more.
💚Children benefit and make the most of their educational opportunities if they attend school regularly and on time.

🎉Time to celebrate!🎉 Our school has recently been recognized for our work implementing a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. PBIS is an evidence-based three-tiered prevention framework designed to improve and integrate all data, systems, and practices impacting student outcomes. National research shows that full implementation of PBIS leads to reduced exclusionary discipline and improved student and teacher outcomes.
By establishing the PBIS framework, we are developing skills of the students and adults, making system changes to our school environment to enhance school climate, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and using data to identify needed supports for our students and teachers.
As a result of this work, we are being recognized by the FLPBIS Project for achieving Bronze PBIS Model School status. This award demonstrates our commitment to positive outcomes for all students and helps us celebrate our efforts as we progress toward full implementation of PBIS.

𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗟𝗢𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬📲: The School Board of Highlands County transportation department recently introduced the opportunity for bus riders' parents to know their assigned bus's location using the free app "Where's the Bus."
Dear Parents and Guardians of Highlands County bus riders:
Highlands County school buses are now equipped with GPS technology that may benefit your household, as your student(s) use their Bus Pass/Student ID Card/Student ID number to sign on and off the bus as they board and exit the bus. The WheresTheBusTM parent app lets you know precisely when your child’s bus will arrive at your bus stop. This app is free to all Highlands County bus-riding households. The system also helps Transportation efficiently manage our bus fleet routes.
To use the WheresTheBusTM app, download the WheresTheBusTM app from the App Store (iOS / Apple) or Google Play Store (Android). You will be prompted to create an account. Select Highlands County from the dropdown menu and provide your student’s information. Once your student’s information is verified, you will create an account and will be able to log in and access the app.
Additional information on the WheresTheBusTM parent app is included below. I encourage you to try this exciting new technology, as we continually strive to provide you with the best possible transportation service.
Sincerely,
Willie Hills
Highlands County Director of Transportation
WheresTheBusTM lets you know precisely when your bus will arrive at your bus stop, providing up-to-the-minute arrival time and bus location information.
Access WheresTheBusTM from any Internet-enabled device (smartphone, tablet, PC, iPod).

Eliminate the stress of rushing to the bus stop and wondering where the bus is. (Students will only be permitted to utilize their assigned bus stop for AM and PM pick up and drop off)
The WheresTheBusTM app is free to Highlands County households, simple, and takes less than 5 minutes to set up. To sign up:
Download the WheresTheBusTM app from the App Store (iOS / Apple) or Google Play Store (Android).

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student will take the Grade 3, 4 or 5 FAST Math & ELA on May 1-7, 2024. 5th grade students will take the Science Assessment on May 7-10, 2024.
If you or your student would like to review the computer-based practice test at home, the practice tests and answer keys are available at https://fsassessments.org/families.html.
Please review the following policies with your student before testing:
𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀—Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom), 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. If your student is found with an electronic device or is found using Bluetooth/wireless headphones/earbuds during testing, his or her test will be invalidated.
𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁—All tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads: “I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.” Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by clicking a checkbox beside the statement in the secure browser indicating they understand the testing rules.
𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴—The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they click the box to accept the Testing Rules Acknowledgment states that because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, students may not discuss or reveal details about the test content (including the passages, prompts, and writing responses) after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to social media sites. Please make sure your student understands this policy prior to testing and remind them that “discussing” test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, posting to social media, or sharing online. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆—Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated. In addition, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns. Student tests within a school that are found to have extremely similar answer patterns will be invalidated.
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀—If your student leaves campus before completing a test session (e.g., for lunch, an appointment), he or she will not be allowed to return to that test session. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on a make-up day. Please remember not to schedule appointments on testing days.
𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀—If your student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a Section 504 Plan, or is an English Language Learner (ELL) or a recently exited ELL, please contact the school to discuss the testing accommodations that will be provided for your student.

On Sunday, March 10, 2024 our clocks will “Spring Forward” an hour, resulting in darker morning commutes. What does that mean for students? The beginning of Daylight Saving Time (DST) means that students and families should consider extra safety measures when traveling to school and bus stops.
𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙗𝙞𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡:
• 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙨. It will be darker on the way to school. Students should wear bright colors to be spotted easily by motorists, or wear a backpack, jacket, or hat featuring reflective fabric.
• 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚. If old enough to walk or bike without an adult, arrange travel to school with a friend or group, as well as wearing bright colors.
• 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙩.It is easy for students to get distracted by their phone, cars, and other pedestrians when walking to school. Remind them to keep alert and aware of their surroundings, and walk on the designated sidewalk or walkway.
• 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙮.Students should maintain focus and look for oncoming traffic in both directions before crossing the street. It's also important for them to continue looking for vehicles until they have finished crossing.
𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨:
• 𝙂𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮. Arrive at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive at the bus stop. Ensure that your child is 6 feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb/roadway at all times.
• 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗳𝗳, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆. Remind them to wait until the bus is completely stopped and the door is open before attempting to enter or exit, and use the handrail on the stairs. When the bus is in motion, everyone should stay seated, keep all body parts and school materials inside the bus, ensure the aisle is clear of books and bags, and use a seatbelt if one is provided.
• 𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨.The United States Department of Transportation states that almost all bus-related injuries involving children happen outside and around the bus. The ”danger zone” is considered 10 feet around the bus on all sides. Students should never walk behind a school bus and always make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing (at least 10 feet) in front of the bus to ensure that you are seen. If your child drops something near the school bus like a phone or a book, the safest thing for them to do is to get the bus drivers attention, then tell the bus driver right away before attempting to retrieve the item.
